marlene, I used my 55-200 lense for those shots, but I notice that when I try to take a photo a little too close, it will not focus and click. I'm sure there is a way to override this and it may be just a simple auto focus thing.
I notice too that when I use the micro setting, I'm not getting as close as I would like and that too would not allow me to click.

Sorry, sweetie, did not see this.
No, you cannot override if you are too close. You need to back up. The 55-200 lens cannot be that close. If you want a close-up, you need to use your other lens. Though you have a macro setting, you do not get true macro pictures. You need a macro lens for this (Nikon's is called a Micro).
I am looking into this lens: Nikon 35mm AF-S DX f/1.8 lens. It works great with our entry level cameras, is only about a month old, and is supposed to be pretty nice. My son seems to think so, anyway. He doesn't have one, but saw it and thought it would be perfect for me. It's about $200. Not bad. Marlene, never too much info!!..
So, from what I just read, ths lens is to take the place of the lens that came with the camera? Would I switch out for low light, or leave it on knowing it will work better in low light?
I was trying to understand why this lens instead of the 18-55..yeah, I need beginner language.....

I'm honestly thinking of getting another camera body so I don't have to keep changing lenses....this lens is one to think about, too.

Roe - yes, you could use this lens instead of the 18-55. But you will need to move your body to go back or come forward. btw, you can get as close as a foot to your subject. You shouldn't toss the other lens, tho. Just keep this as your workhorse. Peter has a 50mm - he doesn't even own the 18-55 anymore. That's him, tho.
That lens is a low light lens. F 1.8 which means it takes in light very quickly and well so you can take photos in low light. I don't like flash photography that much, thus I would really like this lens. Then you don't have to set your ISO too high or slow your speed down as much. Higher ISO means more grain and slow shutter speed means more chance of blur. Thus this lens is a good idea.
Now for me, it's a matter of convincing Jim that I really need that lens!
For you, just decide if that's what you want.
Lynn, even tho this is darn expensive, you may rather have an 18-200 lens (or 300). If you can swing it, I'd get that one.
Ok, I have now exhausted my camera knowledge!

Roe, I love both of those. I wish I could see more of the back board on the basketball net though. But it certainly has an interesting look from that angle.

Roe, those are very nice! I love that you are out there, thinking about this and trying new stuff! Since you do have digital, you can take lots and lots to get what you want. Try that bb netting a few more times, changing your angle a little more, till you get the "perfect" shot, just for practice. Beaue what you did is good, but you might be surprised at what other slightly different one is good, too. KWIM?

As for the smaller lens, yes, you could use it most of the time. But it would get some getting used to. If you are happy with your currently lenses, then sit on this one for now. I have the same as you, and do fine. If I had the 35mm low light lens, I would definitely have to rethink what I do. But I use my longer lens most of the time, by far. But when I seriously want to get closer and am physically closer, the shorer lens is better (either what I have or the 35mm I wish I had).

Wow...you gals have been busy! Roe, I absolutely love the basketball net shot! It's so creative, great angle sweetie!
Also, Roe to comment on your question....Marlene had great advice in most cases you would need a different lens however, you may try using manual focus when you are that close, it allows you to determine your focal point....this doesn't always work but it may help until you get a different lens.....
