Mel, do you know how to see that settings the rock one was taken on? Did you use manual or did you put on a point and shoot setting, such as landscape or whatever? I am curious to know the f stop, shutter speed, etc. And did you use a tripod?

Ok, just to say that I don't think you can have it on manual and auto at the same time, unless it's auto focus or auto white balance or some other auto. Shooting auto can't shoot manual similtaneously. I have to say auto was a perfect idea at that moment!!!
The settings show up when you are taking the picture at the bottom of your view through the viewfinder. Afterwards I think they show up somewhere while still in the camera but not sure ..... once you load them in, an editing program should give you how it was shot. Such as ISO speed, f stop, distance, etc. I admit I had to look for it. In PSE 6, you can find it in your organizer under Properties Metadata. HOnestly, right now I am not sure how I found it. AH - got it! Go the Windows at the top and click on Properties.
I am not sure I will be much help, but I will try!!!
When you are editing, you can get this information by going to file, then file info, then camera data 1. Doesn't look to me to be very complete.
If you want very precise photo editing, then it's another expense, like Lightroom, or the program that you likely got a sample of with your camera. For now, I am not doing either.
I hope I didn't just add to the confusion!
When you are

Oh, yeah. Point and shoot. Use auto or any of the other settings, such as the one with the kids, the sports mode, the landscape, etc. Those are all auto, and adjust for the type of photo you are taking for you.

Those are some beautiful pics!! Can't wait til you scrap them!!

Yes, makes sense.
Hey, my 2 cents of advice. Ignore us for a while, and just take pics, on different settings, and even dive into manual. Once you get some idea of what's there, even if you don't understand it, you will at the very least be a tiny bit familiar with things. Then after a bit of use, and some pictures that really aren't that good (it has to happen!), then you can begin to learn some new stuff.
OR you could methodically go about learning page by page of your manual.
Nah, I wouldn't want to do that either!

Mel, great pics. The second one is really nice though. Very creative! I think you are doing great your first time with the camera! Keep working at it, you will get more comfortable the more you use it and then you can start playing with the settings.
