What do you all do to store your photos, outside the computer?

Since I don't order 'paper' photos fron online or any local company, I don't have a lot of excess photos. However, I have a hard time just throwing away thos extras I print and don't use. So, I keep them in a box. From my computer they go into the external hard file and then a CD

I have lots of photos and I store mine in a storage tote that's long and flat and I store it under my bed. I think it's actually for christmas wrapping paper. It sure does hold a lot of photos.

Let me rephrase my question. The room we are running out of is computer space. Boxes are not the issue, not yet, anyway.
We were loading Peter's pix from a wedding he just shot (fabulous, btw) as a back up for him (I worry he'll lose somebody's photos before he gets them back to them), but couldn't do it as it would have filled us up.
Sooo I did some deleting, which helped but not enough, by any means. I need to get tough.
However, Jim reminds me that I can do all that but the problem will return as long as I take pictures. So ....
external HD. Discs. What about online storage? I am thinking of that but it makes me nervous.

Marlene, my suggestion is for Peter to have his own external harddrive for him to put all his work on. Since he seems to have a 'business', I would keep things seperate.
I hate deleting anything from my computer even though I have back up..Guess I'm just programed that way....
Every couple of weeks, I will cleanup. I go into those folders where I have multitude of shots that I took for a layout or card to be posted. I transfer it to the 'scrapbook' folder or 'card' folder. Then I can get rid of the folder with the 'junk' photos.
I guess everyone has a system so whatever works and becomes habit.

I have heard a lot of people having extra external hard drives to store a lot of photos on. One of those gals is a photographer too. You can also transfer all your photos over to some printing sites....mine all automatically go over to snapfish where they are stored as a back up system for my own ...it is free. I still back up my own with CD's too and I'm over due on getting that done....should have done it at the new year. It probably wouldn't hurt Peter to put every job he does on a separate labeled CD as a back up anyway.

I'm going to start transferring my photos and digi pages to DVD's..they hold more and last a long time. I've been using CD's but my digis take up a lot of space.
I've thought about online storage but hubby always brings up "what if they go broke and out of business..photos gone" and that makes me very nervous.
I agree that Peter should have something separate from everything else.

Yes, Peter does have separate storage. He's not even in our system. I didn't explain well ... nope, I didn't. I only suggested to him to stick his recent photos on ours just in case something goes amiss while editing on his computer. He has external, has to. Way too many photos. The only reason we discovered our shortage was cuz of my offer to hold on to these till he's done with them on his.
But it was a good thing, because we discovered how much my stuff (really, it's mostly mine) is taking up.
Am going to do the DVD thing. Just need to get a tiny bit better organized.
Thanks, all!

I keep a lot on my computer, but I back up the entire system incld. pics to cd monthly. Then once I'm getting full up, or I notice big folders I dont' go to, I print an index print from Picasa, load the pics to cd, and keep with the index print, so if I want a print, then I don't have to rely on how I labeled the disc...make sense?

CD's and DVD's are good options Marlene.
As for Peter, he really needs and external drive or needs to at least backup his images to disc. A wedding is something that can not be redone so the method of his backups aren't the issue just as long as he is backing things up. I have an external hard drive but I also burn every shoot to a disc and put it in my fire safe.
There are tons of options out there for storage. It all depends on the amount you need and what works best in your lifestyle.

I don't do Picasa, but am curious about the index print thing. Not sure I get how that works. I looked at Picasa, but it's not a photo storage thing, right? Sorry - didn't delve into it much ...
Ticia, Peter does have external, it's just me being the worried mom - our computer is just another place to keep them, just in case .... both of his places, computer and external have problems. He's still young, doesn't know everything (tho he thinks so), and I am just trying to be helpful in case of crash .... We'd be dead in a fire, tho. He needs to get a fire safe.

That's another good reason to store a backup off site like at snapfish or Kodak.

Marlene, is he ordering prints for this wedding or just giving them digital files? The reason I ask is because what the other ladies are saying is a good idea about online backup. As for your personal stuff snapfish is fine but if Peter is collecting money from these shoots he will not be able to use a site like that. There are sites out there though...winkflash, shutterfly, smugmug...just to name a few. Having a fire safe is smart for you as well as Peter...we never think about that but heaven forbid something like that happen at least you would have all your "memeries" in a safe place. They are very affordable also.
serene scrapper
Yes, a fire safe is what he should do. In fact, we have one, small, but for now he can stick them in ours till he gets his own.
