Second Week of Feb AssignmentsWhatever you got done for last week, bravo! Just keep at it!
Now to this week.
1. Try the landscape setting. Frankly, I think auto and landscape give you the same thing, but try two of the same shot and see if there is a difference.
2. Try a close-up. Do you have a macro/micro/close-up setting? If so, get up close and personal with something that will hold still for you.
3. Read this on Exposure. http://digital-photography-school.com/digital-photography-tips-for-beginners There are several articles. I will be giving this assignment for a few weeks because it takes time to get it to sink in.
4. I want you to observe light. Light outside, in the morning, noon, late afternoon, evening. Light in the house at different times of day. Notice large and small differences. Take photos if you want. But begin observing light and how it looks and what it does. it's key, IMHO.
Thanks to Mel for the digital photography school site, above. It's very very good. Yes, I believe it's written for this with DSLR's, but if you have manual settings on your camera, then the rules are the same, with some exceptions.
I have said already, not an expert. Several of you know a lot more than I do. But that doesn't matter. We need to all work from where we are.

Here is a landscape example. I had to take Em to school yesterday morning early for a Beta Club meeting so grabbed my camera on the way out. I knew something would leap out at me in the early morning light. There are a couple of houses across from each other with large ponds - one about knocked me over with its reflections. I stopped and took several shots. This is only one. This one was shot in Landscape Mode. Once set, the camera "reads" the lighting etc and sets itself. My program I used for downloading tells me the particulars.
ISO 200
Aperture f/9
Shutter Speed 1/100s (I think that means 1 100th of a sec, but not sure - told you I am learning!)
That's what the camera decided on. I also used auto focus on this shot.

on the indian reserve..must have taken a while to build
here's a few pics i took
it was a very hazey day today. the pic of the church outside didn't
turn out as good as i would have liked..but heh..i tried!
here's the church ~ it sits up on a hill ~ yep..that was quite a hike!
good exercise
kinda sad though ~ it has be vandalized and there's grafitti all over the

this pic was taken on *landscape* ~ hazey day
this is a pic of the front of the church ~ ok..i edited it to sepia ~ just cause
i like the look. i couldn't get the whole front ~ or i would have been
on someone's personal property.. :sad
ok..so then i turned around..and this was the view from the side of the church.
great view of the valley. i took this pic on *landscape* mode. i did take it
on auto, too ~ and nope didn't find much of a difference...weird
then i went inside and took some pics ~ looking out the windows
i changed my setting to apperture ~ think it was about f18 or 16..ack..can't remember! ACK!
ISO 100.. ..should have changed that..duh!
betcha i won't forget that next time
this is looking to the north...i think..
and these two pics are lookin out another window to the west
(mmm..not sure about my bearings ..i'm quessing!)
just as the sun was setting

Good for you, Mel! That are great!
You sound like me. I think you are hard on yourself. You have an excellent piece of equipment and are taking very nice shots. Just keep working at it, and be happy there's digital so you can grow faster while taking as many pictures as you want. Bravo!

It's the Ft. Lewis Military Museum. It started out as a center for soldiers and their families to gather when it was built by the Salvation Army during WWI. Then it was called The Red Shield Inn. It is a very interesting building...sits right along side I-5 if you ever come down this way
Oh, also, that is the photo I softened for the Boys and their Toys LO...
