Rita, I'm not that familiar with that program since I jsut recently got it and it's only a 3.
I'll open it and see what happens. I have Paint Shop Pro and I downloaded a free program that allow you do do different effects, like colors, and light effects. I'll get that website for you and you can check it out. It was an easy download right into your photo program.
I bet marlene can answer this one real quick.. ..I'll go open the program now...

Rita,
Just now seeing this. What version do you have?
To change to B/W go to Enhance. Then convert to black and white. Or alt/ctrl B.
To soften, not 100% sure. I'd have to play around with one to tell you and am off to bed. But I am sure there's more than one way to do it. Remind me and I will fiddle with it tomorrow, hopefully.
Of course, you can see what you can do w/o me too.

Ok, I played around..wow, I found out some cool effects.. ..
I clicked on Enhance, then Adjust Color, then Remove Color
Now I had my photo is b/w
Then I clicked on Filter, then Render, then Lighting Effects
It will open with you photo showing. There is a drop down box called 'style' This was done with the either floodlight or spotlight; don't remember. You can move the points by dragging to get the light in different areas on the photo.

Okay...I used Photoshop CS3 for all the following editing....
first open the image you wish you use...
go to the image tap in the top left
adjustments
selective color (red)
reduce the blacks to your liking
click okay
go to the image tap again
adjustments
covert to b&w
click okay
go to image one more time
levels (play with it until you get it where you want it) This tool is used to adjust the depth of the image so that will help in framing your subject.
Below you will find a before and after using the following steps. I know there are a lot and If you would prefer to send me the image I could do it for you and send it back. I also have special filters that soften the image for you that I have purchased as add ons to photoshop...I could even use one of those on your image.
Before (right out of camera RAW)
After

Keep in mind that is just a rough showcase of what you can actually do with the image....there really isn't a whole lot you can do to mess something up...the best way to learn photoshop is to play around with it....also if you ever have a question, "google" it! I know it sounds silly but there are plenty of step by step instructions (video based) that can help you through a lot of this stuff...
Just my thoughts...let me know if I can help in anyway!
