Masking

So I tried a couple of places that tell me how to do masking without "layer mask" on my program.  I did download layer mask, but wanted to see how I could fake it if needed.  I found a couple of places that told me how.  Tried both - similar directions.  Just didn't work for me.  I don't know what I am missing.  I really am not savvy with this kind of thing, usually fuss around with things till it somehow comes together, not really understanding what I am doing.

So, gals, so far I am no help to those who want to try this.  Except to say go to http://www.hiddenelements.com/ and download and add to whatever Photoshop Elements version you have.  I can get that one to work (tho I did struggle with it too, but no more).

One of the things is that in my mind things don't make sense.  For instance, with the layer mask capability, you color the mask black.  Now why?  I have absolutely no clue whatsoever.  See what I mean?

Anyway, I am still playing around and if I have a break hrough, I will let you know!

No, that's not it, Roe.  But that is interesting!  That is in the full Photoshop program, which I don't have.  Will have to check it out more thoroughly, tho, and see if PSE can do this.

Here is the thing.  Fullblown Photoshop and I believe, Photoshop Creative Suite, has all the masking tools.  Elements does not.  Elements is less money - lots less - as it does not have everything PS has.  But it has enough for people like you and me.  However, there are some things you can either "fake" or find an add-on for.  Believe me, I do not know what all the program can do, let alone what it's missing.

There are courses you can take to learn it all.  Not to mention seriously teaching yourself.  But I won't spend the money on that.  So I search for tutorials.  Whatshername - Hummie? - has tutorials for masking but alas, you have to pay for that one.  Bummer.

I am going to go over to Peter's photo on the playground and tell you what he did and what masking can do to get that.  See you there!
