Just getting the idea ....

I have not had near the time I would like to play with my camera, but did get a few shots in over the last couple of days.  I am determined to understand settings, lighting, and all the other stuff, but for me it takes time, and a lot of repetition.  And, uh, patience!  Anyway, this was just while fooling around with settings in evening artificial light.  It's not great, but I really like it anyway!  The coloring was simply an accident.  I think it's pretty cool!

This is soooo cool, Marlene.  Reminds me of a Rockwell in the Saturday Evening Post!

I had it on Manual, ISO 400, f/6.3, 1/2 sec shutter speed.  The room is a pale yellowish color, perhaps contributing to the hue of the photo.  I had little idea what I was doing.  Just got lucky!  I edited it slightly, but only to increase the clarity (I used Lightroom, which my son gave me from his yearbook class.  Too pricey for me to buy, don't use it much).  I also shot on RAW.  I can edit in Photoshop instead, which I normally use.  But need to shoot in jpg for that, I think.

I really need to play with the 'numbers' more, but I don't.  I don't recall ever shooting in RAW.  Maybe because when I read about it, I didn't understand it.

Have you been to the Nikon Imaging Digitutor for your camera?  Check it out because it does help in recognizing parts of your camera.

Keep up the great work and always share with us!!!

just awsome!     for sharing your process of learning your camera.  i don't know anyone that can just read/learn something like that and go....we all have to practice and try....and try again....and again...hehe

It really helped me a lot to take the photog class in Nov.  I can't in good conscience pass the course on to you, but I can share some of the stuff I learned.  It's all basic, and I am sure you can find info here and there on the basics of a DSLR.

I don't fully get it all, by any means.  Even the teacher said it takes a while to sink in.  but you won't learn if you don't try.  You can keep it on Auto all the time.  But you will never learn to be creative that way.  With a good camera, you will get a good picture on Auto.  But you can get a BETTER picture by learning what you camera can do for you.  but it takes time - practice - time - practice - experimentation - practice - time.  And with digital, it costs you no more than recharging your battery and filling up your files on your computer.

RAW, Roe, is taking a picture where it is processed in your camera, but it's still as if it's in the darkroom.  In Lightroom, you can process it some more.  And you can do so in your camera (you can do this in jpg too, I believe).  It's somehow not quite done when it's in RAW.  That's the best I currently can explain it.  And I am sure if Peter was looking over my shoulder, he'd say I don't get it.  No surprise there.  I would keep shooting in jpg, Roe.  In fact, I think I will switch back to jpg/fine for now.  I haven't quite grasped the need for RAW, but maybe eventually I will.

I hope to share some photo tips as I learn them, a little here and a little there.

But first, I need to learn myself!

Marlene..I hear ya...I'll read something and I do understand..until it comes time to apply it....

Guess I never saw a need to figure out the RAW so I never looked into it.

Anything you would like to share is fine..

Great photo sweetie....

RAW is exactly that raw! When you take a picture in JPEG it is compressed which minimizes your editing capability and in RAW, how you take you picture is exactly how it comes out. So all the info that your camera reads to take the picture is available to you once you are ready to edit. In RAW you have to edit the picture. You can not print a RAW file. You also have to have photoshop CS3 or better or Lightroom to even be able to use your RAW files. Once you learn how to use RAW it is very useful. I always shoot in RAW, even in snapshots. There are pros and cons to both JPEG and RAW though. You just have to pick your poison!

I am glad to see that you are getting out there and learning your camera Marlene!

Ticia, now you are making me want to try RAW and see what I get....

Make sure you have the program to play with it, Roe.  It's fun.  Hey, look up online a fuller explanation, that will whet your appetite!

marlene, that was interesting and you know what?...I'll stay with jpg....

Yes, good choice.  RAW I think is for people like Ticia and Peter.  And Ken Rockwell is a professional (a rather opinionated one, but worth listening to), and doesn't use it.  Your creativity is to be spent elsewhere.
