Digital works of artWell, I hardly think I am an expert so please don't point to me when something doesn't work............. I am just playing. Roe requested to know how I did the Butterfly on Canvas. I have no idea how this would look printed but it does look pretty cool on screen. Here you go:
Open your background photo. Choose something that has nice composition. Does not have to be perfectly focused or fabulous in other ways.
In PSE go to Filter > Texture > Texturizer. When you get there, choose Canvas for your texture. Other choices there are Scaling, Relief, Light, and whether or not to invert. Play with these and see what you like. I Chose 175% in Scaling, Relief is 10, Light is Top Right (I have no idea about this setting!), and I DID Invert. Then click OK.
You may want to adjust the lighting at this point. Go Enhance, choose Adjust Lighting, then fiddle with bright and contrast till you have what you like.
Now choose your foreground subject. Open that. Crop.
Move that onto your bg canvas pic.
Open your Background Eraser tool Choose the setting that works best to erase everything but your main item/person/animal/whatever.
Erase till you have what you want. Hint: erase a bit, then let up on mouse. Keep going this way. This helps that when you make a mistake you don't have to start completely over.
Hint: Use your regular eraser tool for large areas to erase, then switch to the BG eraser for right up next to your subject.
Also, there's more than one way to skin a cat so you may find a better way. You can use your selection tools also. Depends a lot on how hard/easy it is to select on your subject.
Here is one I just did so I could think through the steps to do this for you:
it was quick and not quite perfect but you get the idea.
Will you try this?
