Commentary from the unexpert, First wk FebI hope to do this each week. Now you see how photo-illiterate I am. I will only give you what I know.
One assignment was to use Sports setting. This setting, far as I understand it, automatically sets the shots to shoot fast - uses a fast shutter speed so you can get clear shots of sporting events, animals in action, a river running like Grammy did, that kind of thing. It makes the setting choices for you so you don't have th figure it out. Great setting when you know you will be taking something in motion. Most digital cameras have this setting. Remember it rather than auto when you are in those situations.
The other assignment I gave was for Portrait. In this mode the setting is softer, giving a moodier look to your photo. It also may require being very steady or using a tripod. That depends on you and your camera. If you get blur with a portrait photo, then either try to hold very very still or invest in a tripod (don't go too cheap, some just don't work well). Again, the setting is thought out for you, so you don't have to. Most digital cameras have this setting.
**You should try your setting first to make sure it's what you want in the situation you are in just in case it doesn't work great for you. You can switch to auto or something else instead. Of course, you don't always have time so auto may be your first choice if you are rushed.
I also suggested you get out your manual. You may or may not have looked it over. No tests, so you are ok! But if you really don't know how to use your camera, then your manual is your friend, no matter how hard it is to understand. You can also find clues online sometimes. What do you really want to master? Read that section, then if it seems appropriate, find your camera's website and see what you can find out. Worth a shot, no pun intended.
I also suggested you take more pictures. Keep it up, girls!
